{"id":696,"date":"2004-01-28T16:16:47","date_gmt":"2004-01-29T00:16:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.suchland.com\/craig\/?p=696"},"modified":"2009-06-23T21:41:50","modified_gmt":"2009-06-24T05:41:50","slug":"challenger-columbia-and-apollo-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.suchland.com\/craig\/?p=696","title":{"rendered":"Challenger, Columbia and Apollo 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On this, the 18th anniversary of the space shuttle Challenger disaster, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceflightnow.com\/challenger\/timeline\/\">comprehensive timeline of Challenger&#8217;s last flight<\/a> and a similar timeline for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsday.com\/news\/health\/ny-hscov0127,0,442476.story?coll=ny-health-headlines\">final minutes of the shuttle Columbia&#8217;s<\/a> mission last year.<\/p>\n<p>The loss of Challenger and Columbia have both been memorialized on Mars with the landing site of the Spirit Mars Exploration Rover in Gusev Crater being named <a href=\"http:\/\/marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov\/newsroom\/pressreleases\/20040106b.html\">Columbia Memorial Station<\/a> and its twin rover Opportunity&#8217;s landing site in Meridiani Planum on the opposite side of Mars <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceflightnow.com\/mars\/mera\/040128challenger.html\">Challenger Memorial Station<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NASA also memorialized the <href=\"http:\/\/nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/planetary\/lunar\/apollo1info.html\">Apollo 1<\/a> crew &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hq.nasa.gov\/office\/pao\/History\/Apollo204\/zorn\/grissom.htm\">Gus Grissom<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hq.nasa.gov\/office\/pao\/History\/Apollo204\/zorn\/white.htm\">Ed White<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hq.nasa.gov\/office\/pao\/History\/Apollo204\/zorn\/chaffee.htm\">Roger Chaffee<\/a> -by dedicating the hills surrounding the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit&#8217;s landing site to the astronauts. The crew of <a href=\"http:\/\/history.nasa.gov\/Apollo204\/\">Apollo 1<\/a> perished in a flash fire during a launch pad test of their Apollo spacecraft at Kennedy Space Center, Fla., 37 years ago yesterday.
