{"id":718,"date":"2004-09-21T15:47:00","date_gmt":"2004-09-21T23:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.suchland.com\/craig\/?p=718"},"modified":"2009-06-23T21:17:40","modified_gmt":"2009-06-24T05:17:40","slug":"another-extension-for-spirit-and-opportunity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.suchland.com\/craig\/?p=718","title":{"rendered":"Another Extension for Spirit and Opportunity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The twin <a href=\"http:\/\/marsrover.nasa.gov\/home\/index.html\">Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity<\/a>, have been given another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/home\/hqnews\/2004\/sep\/HQ_04307_mars_emerges.html\">six-month extension<\/a> (which will take the mission almost a full year past the original 90-day plan following an earlier <a href=\"http:\/\/marsrover.nasa.gov\/newsroom\/pressreleases\/20040408a.html\">five-month extension<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The rovers are just emerging from 12-day communications blackout period when Mars passed nearly behind the sun, and have also passed the winter solstice on Mars &#8211; now days will get longer and the rovers will get more sunlight to keep their batteries charged.<\/p>\n<p>Plans are for Spirit to drive to the top of Husband Hill so it can get a view all the way to the edge of Gusev Crater, and Opportunity will drive out of Endurance Crater to take a peek at its nearby discarded heat shield and then make a 3-mile drive to Victoria Crater.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The twin Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, have been given another six-month extension (which will take the mission almost a full year past the original 90-day plan following an earlier five-month extension).
