It was centered far enough away from Anchorage (175 miles) to not do any damage, but boy did it rock the house for a long time!  It also reminded me that it&#8217;s been a number of years since one of our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avo.alaska.edu\/\">local volcanoes<\/a> has erupted.  I&#8217;ve been here for eruptions of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avo.alaska.edu\/avo4\/atlas\/Redoubt.htm\">Redoubt<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avo.alaska.edu\/avo4\/atlas\/Spurr.htm\">Spurr<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE<br \/>\nPeter Haeussler, of the U.S. Geological Survey, flew over the path of the Denali fault by helicopter to photograph the <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/eqinthenews\/uslbbl\/photos\/pr071102\/\">effects of Sunday&#8217;s earthquake<\/a>. The fault line was visible for 140 miles, and his photos include a <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/eqinthenews\/uslbbl\/photos\/pr071102\/augustanack2.jpg\">16 foot offset<\/a> near Augustana Creek, a <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/eqinthenews\/uslbbl\/photos\/pr071102\/cglacier2.jpg\">long crack in Canwell Glacier<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/eqinthenews\/uslbbl\/photos\/pr071102\/brglslide2.jpg\">two rockslides over Black Rapids Glacier<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/eqinthenews\/uslbbl\/photos\/pr071102\/\">many more<\/a>. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adn.com\/\">Anchorage Daily News<\/a> also has some photos of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adn.com\/front\/v-enlarge\/story\/2080512p-2178294c.html\">cracks<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adn.com\/front\/v-enlarge\/story\/2076132p-2173836c.html\">in the<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adn.com\/front\/v-enlarge\/story\/2080512p-2178289c.html\">highways<\/a> of central Alaska, and the damage to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adn.com\/front\/v-enlarge\/story\/2076132p-2173886c.html\">supports of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline<\/a>. The pipeline, designed to withstand and 8.2 magnitude quake, successfully <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adn.com\/front\/story\/2080511p-2178245c.html\">passed this test<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s magnitude 7.9 earthquake was really interesting!
