Aurora Watch

The coming months are going to be great for the Northern Lights! It’s finally getting dark enough here, and solar activity has really picked up as we approach the peak of the 11-year solar cycle. The BBC has a story about a giant sunspot currently moving across the face of the sun. You’ll find current images over at the NASA Solar Data Analysis Center site. The SOHO Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) full-field He II 304 Å image shows the sunspot very well (although I myself prefer the Fe IX, X 171 Å).
