Thirty-Meter Telescope Funded

Caltech’s Thirty Meter Telescope (formerly known as the California Extremely Large Telescope) has received $17.5 million for a detailed design study from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Construction of the observatory at a yet undetermined site in Hawaii, Chile, or Mexico could be completed by 2012.

    Hey,
Just one quick question. Assuming that TMT will live up to the potential that Astronomers think it has, do you think that the TMT is a good way to spend Canadian tax dollars? Please Justify.

    Thank you

Actually, I’m surprised to see that the Canadians are even contemplating contributing to the funding. It’s only justified if you believe that science is important….

It’s not just Cal Tech’s project — much of the conceptual work on this was done by astronomers and astrophysicists at UC Santa Cruz. We have matching funds for this project as well!
