Earthquake!

Today’s magnitude 7.9 earthquake was really interesting! It was centered far enough away from Anchorage (175 miles) to not do any damage, but boy did it rock the house for a long time! It also reminded me that it’s been a number of years since one of our local volcanoes has erupted. I’ve been here for eruptions of Redoubt and Spurr.

UPDATE
Peter Haeussler, of the U.S. Geological Survey, flew over the path of the Denali fault by helicopter to photograph the effects of Sunday’s earthquake. The fault line was visible for 140 miles, and his photos include a 16 foot offset near Augustana Creek, a long crack in Canwell Glacier, two rockslides over Black Rapids Glacier and many more. The Anchorage Daily News also has some photos of cracks in the highways of central Alaska, and the damage to the supports of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. The pipeline, designed to withstand and 8.2 magnitude quake, successfully passed this test.

Categories

This weekend’s project is use Movable Type‘s category feature to sort all of this stuff into a couple of piles. My biggest obstacle is trying to come up with a finite number of categories so they end up being somewhat useful. Any suggestions???

NASA Exploration Team

The “stepping-stone” approach to space exploration proposed by the NASA Exploration Team reminds me of The Millennial Project: Colonizing the Galaxy in Eight Easy Steps, a book given to me by one of my high school interns. Owen, if you’re out there, I’ve read it.

Conversion to Movable Type

After two and a half years as a faithful Blogger user I finally made the switch to Movable Type. I think having my site template lost one more time had something to do with the decision.

The installation was relatively painless considering I needed to have the cooperation of my hosting company, and Movable Type’s import feature made it simple to convert all of my old postings (check the archives in the right column of each page). Not everything is exactly the way I’d like it to be, but I thought going live with the new version would provide me with some incentive to finish up the remaining details.
