Tecumseh’s Curse
Until today, I had not heard of Tecumseh’s Curse on the U.S. Presidents. Legend has it that the Shawnee Indian Chief, Tecumseh, sent a message to then General William Henry Harrison in which he predicted that Harrison would become president, but would die while serving his term (something that had not, up to that point, ever happened). He also predicted the president chosen every 20 years after that would also die in office: William Harrison (elected 1840, died of pneumonia 1841), Abraham Lincoln (elected 1860, assassinated 1865), James Garfield (elected 1880, ssassinated 1881), William McKinley (elected 1900, assassinated 1901), Warren Harding (elected 1920, died of food poisoning 1923), Franklin Roosevelt (elected 1940, died of stroke 1945), John Kennedy (elected 1960, assassinated 1963), Ronald Reagan (elected 1980, survived assassination attempt 1981)….

Russian Ark
Alexander Sokurov’s film Russian Ark is an incredible filmmaking accomplishment – set in 33 rooms of the Russian State Hermitage Museum with over 2000 actors, the extravagant 90-minute film was shot in one continuous take. “I am sick of editing,” Sokurov said. Since normal 35mm cameras are limited to about 12 minutes of filming, he used a Sony HDW-F900 stedicam specially modified to record to disk rather than tape. Although months of rehearsals were required, the entire film was shot in just 90 minutes. Take a look at the trailer.

Hardwood Computer Peripherals
If you’re tired of that old beige or black computer look, check out Wood Contour Corporation, makers of keyboards, mice and LCD displays constructed out of various hardwoods. I don’t know about the keyboards and mice, but the displays are quite nice (but a little pricey).

TiVo ‘God’s Machine’
It’s rare that a government official makes a statement this strong, but Michael Powell, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) says that his favorite Christmas present is his TiVo. He went so far as to say TiVo is ‘God’s Machine’, and he would like the ability to share recorded programs.

Dynamically-sized Form Elements
An interesting bit of JavaScript programming that allows you to dynamically size INPUT and TEXTAREA form elements. I’m not sure where I’d use this, but it’s an intesting trick.
