Did Quark Matter Strike Earth?

Researchers looking for evidence of strange quark matter have identified seismic events that might indicate the passage of strange quark matter through the Earth. One event occurred on 22 October, 1993, when, according to the researchers, something entered the Earth off Antarctica and left it south of India 0.73 of a second later. The other occurred on 24 November, 1993, when an object entered south of Australia and exited the Earth near Antarctica 0.15 of a second later.

Birthday Gifts!

Hank showed up last night with a birthday gift (a little early). It was a copy of Leo Laporte’s 2003 Technology Almanac, which immediately paid for itself when we popped the enclosed disk into the DVD player and found the solution to the problem Hank was having with the new disk drive he was trying to install. Cornell Athena Team

The Cornell University Athena Mars Exploration Rover team has interesting weekly updates on their website that provides an inside look at the troubleshooting involved in getting every last detail just right on the two rovers before their launches next summer. You can follow their progress as they fix one problem after another. They also have a sample picture taken by one rover’s camera that shows the quality of the images we can expect to see from Mars.

Supercomputing Leapfrog

IBM announced today that they’ve been awarded a contract to build the world’s fastest supercomputers for for the U.S. Department of Energy. The two systems, ASCI Purple and Blue Gene/L, together will have more computing power than all 500 of the systems on the current TOP500 List of supercomputers.
